In the quest for a true circular economy for plastics, Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) is calling on the European Union (EU) to prioritise five key areas, ensuring competitiveness and innovation. PRE stresses the crucial need to meet the targets set out in the EU Green Deal by 2029, while transforming the plastics economy into a circular economy in Europe.
Accelerating the transition to a circular economy in Europe
To encourage this transition, the PRE organisation recommends tackling the obstacles in the current system. The aim is to promote harmonised plastic collection systems across the EU. Realistic targets for recycling and recycled content are essential to the success of the project.
Increasing transparency and combating greenwashing
Transparency is key to establishing a level playing field for all plastic products, including those from outside the EU. According to the study, "The EU has solid legislation on recycled materials, particularly those intended to come into contact with foodstuffs". Extension to other sectors needs to be considered in order to achieve the targets set. Reliable verification and certification tools are crucial to ensure the traceability of materials, combat greenwashing and maintain fair competition.
Investment in the EU plastics industry
Fair competition is essential to boost investment in the EU plastics industry. This will ensure a sustainable and global supply of high quality recycled materials, encouraging continued innovation and the widespread use of recycled plastics in the economy.
Verification mechanisms for imported goods
Third-party verified certification schemes based on the chain of custody model are advocated to address the challenges associated with unverified material imports. Transparency on origin, traceability and recycled polymer levels form a crucial package to create a standardised framework.
Policies based on scientific assessments
The cornerstone of European action must focus on policies based on scientific assessments and reliable data. These policies will stimulate the EU plastics recycling industry, facilitating the transition to a circular and carbon-neutral economy.
PRE's call for action aligns with the overall objectives of the EU Green Deal, highlighting the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to address the challenges and promote plastics circularity. By focusing on these priorities, the EU can ensure fair competition, boost investment and pave the way for a sustainable and circular plastics future.
